The Sound System of Dutch in a General Phonetic Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
0. Introduction Dutch is a language spoken by about 20 million people in The Netherlands and Belgium. This region is not only characterised by a complex dialect situation, but also by the use of two institutionalised varieties of the Standard language: the Southern variety is spoken in Flanders or the northern part of Belgium, while the Northern variety is confined to The Netherlands. Apart from minor lexical and syntactic differences, there are significant phonetic differences between the two varieties as well as substantial regional variability within the two speech communities. Over the years, the phonetic characteristics of Dutch have been studied in considerable detail. Historically, most experimental research has been carried out on the Northern variety, while analyses of the Southern variety have generally been impressionistic and are at present outdated. An aspect that –remarkablyhas never received any attention is the question as to how the sound system of Dutch compares to that of other languages of the world. This will be the subject of this paper, in which the sound system of the Southern Standard variety of Dutch will be discussed against the background of a substantial collection of phoneme inventories of the world’s languages. These results may be of interest to amongst others language typologists, teachers of Dutch as a Foreign Language, and phoneticians/phonologists who are fundamentally concerned with the distinction between language and medium.

Perception of fricatives by Dutch and English speakers
Two speech perception experiments explored the physical and linguistic bases of phonetic similarity. Because phonological features are grounded in phonetic similarity, these experiments were thus an exploration of the phonetic bases of distinctive features. Experiment 1 found that Dutch listeners rated [s] and [] as more similar to each other than did American English listeners. We attributed ...

The use of revenue from natural resources, including oil, has always attracted the attention of politicians, economists and political scientists as well as various social groups. Here, we study the optimal consumption of oil revenues under different interest rate and social discount rate scenarios, and presence of Dutch disease, using a dynamic computable general equilibrium approach. The result...

Muffler is a part of the vehicle exhaust system that absorb or reflect sound waves to reduce exhaust noise. One of the most important determinants of a muffler performance is the amount of attenuation that has on its input wave; this parameter is known as sound transmission loss. Four - mic standard test is one way to determine this parameter which is used in this paper. In this study, a test d...
متن کاملNative language governs interpretation of salient speech sound differences at 18 months.
One of the first steps infants take in learning their native language is to discover its set of speech-sound categories. This early development is shown when infants begin to lose the ability to differentiate some of the speech sounds their language does not use, while retaining or improving discrimination of language-relevant sounds. However, this aspect of early phonological tuning is not suf...
متن کاملCorpus phonology with speech resources
1. Phonetic considerations in phonological research Phonology is concerned with characterizing the sound patterns of language, typically presented in terms of a system of contrastive sound elements (e.g., syllables, segments, features) and the distribution of those sounds in the makeup of phonological words and phrases. This focus on the sound system and the characteristic patterns that arise w...
